Innovation comes to life in Monaco

Alongside the 10th and 11th Monaco E-Prix events, the Principality is hosting a range of community engagement activities, social impact initiatives, and technology showcases. Twelve years after its launch, Formula E continues to evolve, as demonstrated by the performance of the GEN3 Evo single-seaters, which are racing this weekend on the Circuit de Monaco.

Formula E cars have come a long way in twelve years! During the first season (2014–2015), only one model was homologated: the Spark-Renault SRT 01-E. Featuring a maximum power output of 200 kW, the GEN1 (2014–2018) quickly evolved over the course of its seasons. Drivers had to switch cars mid-race and adapt to new types of technology.

More powerful, the GEN2 (2018–2022) had an energy storage capacity twice that of its predecessor and was capable of completing a full race distance. With a power output of 250 kW, it reached a top speed of 280 km/h. The halo, a safety device mandated by the FIA, was introduced on the GEN2.

The GEN3 (2022–2024) continued this development trend, with a maximum power output of 350 kW and a top speed of around 320 km/h. Lighter than the GEN2, it was also twice as efficient in energy recovery, with approximately 50% regenerative braking capability.

GEN3 Evo, with a look and feel of an F1 car

The current generation single-seater, the GEN3 Evo, delivers 0–100 km/h acceleration comparable to that of a Formula 1 car, in just 1.8 seconds. These innovations have been made possible by the introduction of all-wheel drive, a first for Formula E. It is permitted during qualifying, race starts, and whenever Attack Mode is deployed, twice during the race. Beyond its significant performance capabilities, the GEN3 Evo also stands out for its even more refined visual and aerodynamic design, featuring a slimmer front wing.

Next season, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will welcome the fastest single-seater in the history of the series: the GEN4. With a maximum power output of 600 kW in qualifying and Attack Mode, and 450 kW during the race, it is also the only single-seater with four-wheel drive. It will also be seen on track this Sunday, May 17 at 9:25 a.m., driven by David Coulthard. A moment not to be missed!

Inclusion and education at the heart of the initiatives

The Monaco E-Prix is not limited to the track. The ACM invites the local ecosystem to experience the event from the inside: students, associations, young women aged 12 to 18… all get to discover the paddock behind the scenes and the different careers within motorsport.

This Wednesday, Lucas di Grassi (Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team driver), James Rossiter (former Formula E team principal and GEN4 test driver), and Nerea Martí (Andretti Formula E team ambassador) visited schools in Monaco. It was an opportunity to exchange with children about the discipline and its technological progress.

Two Formula E conferences were also held on Wednesday. The Monaco Women Network, dedicated to leadership, sustainability, innovation and inclusion in modern motorsport, took place at the Société Nautique de Monaco. Another conference, “Change Accelerated,” was held in Sophia Antipolis, west of Nice, featuring contributions from sports stakeholders (ABB, Mahindra Racing).

On Friday, May 15, the FIA Girls on Track initiative will take over the day. In addition to the all-female event, the “Inspiration Hour & Community Tours” initiative will welcome 150 young people from associations and schools across the Côte d’Azur.
