Red is on …

Since the 2018 edition, being fully aware of its responsibility to add to the value of an important asset of international automobile heritage, the Organizing Committee and the Commission of Vintage Cars at Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) have decided to modify the essence of their meeting by putting Formula 1 on top of the list. This is why, in 2021, in the authentic and magical setup of the Principality’s track, the 12th Grand Prix de Monaco Historique will remain faithful to this commitment by celebrating, among other things, the first win for Ferrari in the Formula 1 World Championship …/strong> The 2020 edition, in line with this goal, was meant to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the creation of the World Formula 1 Championship. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced ACM to cancel the event. But it has not decimated the current field of amazing vintage F1 cars and 2021 will allow amateurs of the category which represents the pinnacle of motorsport to race for real. Despite all current sanitary protocols, more than 90 competitors will be present! And every series will have everything in stock to please the passionate as well as the connoisseur fans! There will be a fight between “voiturettes” in the heat of the A Series, the iconics Maserati 250F models facing a great diversity of single-seaters with front engines (B Series), the richness of the C Series (Sports Cars) and the D Series (F1s from the 60s). One third of the E Series will be made of cars powered by 12-cylinder engines (Ferrari, Matra and BRM), in addition to the F Series with three former Grand Prix drivers and a multiple winner of Le Mans 24 Hours. Last but not least, the G Series will host more recent F1s of a great variety of colours … The diversity and richness of the fields will allow to celebrate the greatness of the Ferrari brand, and in particular its very first win in the Formula 1 World Championship, by Argentine’s Froilan Gonzales in 1951 on the Silverstone track. Four models that belong to the legend of motorsport will be visible and active on the mythical Monaco track: For this selection of amazing cars, as well as for the rest of the field, the main factors which presided to the choice of cars accepted by ACM are absolute rarity and a sense of the very exceptional. The spectators will then be able to watch 7 races involving a 100th legendary cars, all of them in a perfect and unique state of conservation. During two and a half days, competitors will share their passion for competition at the highest level of motorsport, in real races, surrounded with the sound and smell which characterize their cars, confronted to their rivals at that time. The track, set in the heart of the Principality of Monaco, is still 80% the same as the track in 1929. It is still used today for the Formula 1 World Championship…" ["post_title"]=> string(46) "12e Grand Prix de Monaco Historique" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(35) "12e-grand-prix-de-monaco-historique" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2022-03-09 16:17:30" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2022-03-09 15:17:30" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(70) "https://acm.mc/index.php/edition/grand-prix-de-monaco-historique-2021/" ["menu_order"]=> int(1878) ["post_type"]=> string(7) "edition" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" } }

About E-Rallye Monte-Carlo

E-Rally Monte-Carlo is an authentic regularity road race reserved to 100% Electric Vehicles (excluding any use of range extenders) and 100% Hydrogen-powered cars. It is now very appreciated by car manufacturers and race teams who are eager to show, in a real and tough environment, the technological and innovative potential of their vehicles. Its new name comes back to 2016, following previous editions called “Rally Monte-Carlo for Electric Vehicles” (1995 to 1999), then “Rally Monte-Carlo Fuel Cell & Hybrids” (2005, 2006), Rally Monte-Carlo for Alternative Energy Vehicles (2007 to 2011) and Rally Monte-Carlo for New Energies / Rally Monte-Carlo ZENN (2012 to 2015). This 5th edition of E-Rally Monte-Carlo will be a race of the 2020 FIA E-Rally Regularity Cup. By definition, E-Rallys are promoting new automobile technologies designed to limit all sorts of pollution (fine particles, CO2, etc.) They also encourage drivers to adopt an eco-responsible driving style, the priority being the protection of environment and the transition in the transportation sector, thanks to using electricity as an energy source for propelling vehicles. This is exactly what Automobile Club de Monaco has been trying to demonstrate over the past twenty years, pursuing with conviction its visionary role. Automobile Club de Monaco remains a proposing force in that domain: E-Rally Monte-Carlo, dedicated to new generation vehicles, has always moved forward, year after year, to stay in phase with modernity. Historic partner of the Automobile Club, e-born, the public network of charging stations with 1200 terminals on the counter today in 11 departments of the South-East, goes back into the adventure by making available its terminals located along the roads of the E-Rallye. Charging stations for electric vehicles will also be provided in the parks by EVBox, also partner of the E-Rally Monte-Carlo. Leader in the electric mobility market, EVBox accelerates sustainable mobility by providing smart and scalable charging infrastructure and supervision software to electric vehicles around the world. A subsidiary of ENGIE, EVBox has produced more than 150,000 charging points, currently in operation in more than 70 countries. With home, business, commercial and public charging solutions, EVBox is helping to build a future where everyday transportation is emission-free. The cars entered in the event are new generation vehicles, representing over ten car manufacturers, all of them leaders on the market, be it with electric cars or fuel cell vehicles using hydrogen…

Michael Lyons, humble hero of a very special Grand Prix de Monaco Historique!

The 12th edition of Grand Prix Historique de Monaco, with seven high-octane races between all the major brands that made the event famous, is now part of the remarkable heritage of Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM). It also had the merit of crowning, on Sunday, a rather humble hero: British driver Michael Lyons, who raced and smiled through three outstanding wins in a row …
This was an historical event because it was the first since 2018, as 2020 had to be postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. And the quality of the field surpassed the worries created by a limited quantity of competitors, for obvious reasons: a hundred cars altogether, perfectly renovated and prepared, instead of 200 or so for previous editions. The show had to go on, and it was a success.

Alesi and Arnoux, two guest stars for Ferrari…
For his come-back on the Monaco track, the former Scuderia driver was the star of the show and should have won Race F, as in Ferrari, after jumping in the lead from his 2th place on the grid and then leading for 15 laps out of 18. However, a race incident with poleman Marco Werner, who was then penalized, changed the outcome of a magnificent race. But the mission had been accomplished: for three days in a row, Alesi and another former F1 driver back behind the wheel of a Ferrari, René Arnoux, pleased the fans around the track, on TV and social networks. They also chatted in the paddock with current F1 stars such as Charles Leclerc and Nico Hülkenberg.

Maserati and Lotus, shining as usual…
If we look at the long list of mythical brands that wrote the legend of Monaco F1 Grand Prix, two of them were in great shape during this 12th edition : Maserati first, because Guillermo Fierro-Eleta won both Races B and C in superb manner, at the wheel of two prestigious and glamorous models of the Italian firm, the 250F and the 300S; Lotus as well, because the English brand founded by Colin Chapman put four different cars in the Top 4 of Race D, and then when Marco Werner’s Lotus 77, in Race F, challenged Jean Alesi’s Ferrari until both cars collided. Other brands also brought back great memories to the most nostalgic fans, such as Talbot-Lago and Bugatti in Race A, Jaguar in Race C, Surtees, McLaren and Hesketh in Races E, F and G for the most recent F1 cars, built between 1970 and 1980.

Lyons roared three times…
In these three very intense races, at speeds that should be unconceivable for 50-year-old cars, the 30-year-old Anglo-Irish driver with red hair, as humble as he is fast, showed all the facets of his huge talent: a perfect start in Race E, to take the lead from poleman Stuart Hall’s McLaren and never look back, formidable pressure in Race F to push Jordan Grogor (Arrows) at fault, and last but not least, absolute wisdom in Race G, in 3rdposition, waiting patiently for something that was meant to happen between Alesi and Werner. This was done in the matter of hours and aboard three very different single-seaters: a blue Surtees TS9, an orange McLaren M26 once driven by James Hunt and a blue Hesketh 308 E, dating back to 1977, that Lyons had set-up perfectly during a testing session at Anglesey, a short and demanding circuit in the north of Wales.

Perfect tarmac, modern tyres…
Lyons will never become a Formula 1 World Champion, but he could not care less. He is happy racing and winning Historic races in cars that he needs to “preserve”, while “setting them up as well as possible for them to be competitive”, he smiles. It was the case this weekend in Monaco, on brand new asphalt, with excellent Avon or Dunlop Racing tyres (depending on the category entered). With these modern tyres on ancient cars, the lap times were incredible and the races outstanding, as it was often the case during the golden age of F1, at the end of the last century.

See you in May 2022!
This was such an historical Grand Prix de Monaco, on all levels, that many actors and spectators will remember it for long. And the good news is: they will not have to wait too long until the 13th edition takes place, from 13 to 15 May, 2022.
