Monaco & the Automobile : Five Rallye Monte-Carlo Legends

Opened on 30 June and open to the public until 6 September 2026 at the Grimaldi Forum, the exhibition Monaco & l’Automobile celebrates more than 130 years of automotive history. In this two-part series, we invite you to discover some of the exhibition’s most iconic vehicles that have left their mark on the Automobile Club de Monaco’s events. In this first part, we focus on five legends of the Rallye Monte-Carlo. The second part will be dedicated to the cars that have shaped the history of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Among the 53 iconic vehicles featured in the exhibition Monaco & the Automobile, from 1893 to the Present Day, some of the greatest legends of the Rallye Monte-Carlo are, of course, included. Here is a non-exhaustive list of five iconic cars from this event, which you can discover at the Grimaldi Forum.

Alpine-Renault A110 Berlinette: the French icon

The car that started France’s rallying legend. The Alpine-Renault A110 Berlinette was the car with which Alpine secured France’s very first manufacturers’ title in the history of the World Rally Championship (WRC), which was established in 1973. The French brand dominated the competition during that inaugural season, winning six of the 13 rounds, including the 1973 Rallye Monte-Carlo.

The car exhibited here is one of the 17 cars from the official team, driven by Jean-Pierre Nicolas and Michel Vial, who finished third in that historic edition. It features the distinctive styling attributes of the ‘berlinette’, with its widened wheel arches, large additional headlights and metallic blue paintwork, which has become legendary among motorsport enthusiasts in France.

Did you know? Winners of the 1973 Rallye Monte-Carlo, Jean-Claude Andruet and his co-driver ‘Biche’ (Alpine No. 18) won by a margin of just 26 seconds ahead of Ove Andersson and a certain Jean Todt (Alpine No. 15).

Lancia Stratos HF: racing in its purest form

With four victories at the Rallye Monte-Carlo to its name, the Lancia Stratos HF is one of the most legendary rally cars ever built. Unbeatable between 1975 and 1977, Sandro Munari won the event three times in a row. The French drivers Bernard Darniche and Alain Mahé secured a fourth and final victory for the Stratos in 1979.

Designed exclusively for competition, the Stratos HF is characterised by its radical design and its mid-mounted Ferrari V6 engine. It quickly became the undisputed benchmark in rallying. In 1977, the Fiat Group prioritised the 131 Abarth, but the Stratos still enjoyed success: the number 1 car driven by Sandro Munari and Silvio Maiga, sporting Alitalia’s colours, took the win.

A regular entrant in the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique, it continues to captivate enthusiasts today with its unique silhouette and the unmistakable sound of its Ferrari V6 engine.

Did you know? Between 1974 and 1981, the Lancia Stratos HF secured 18 victories in the World Rally Championship: 5 at the Rally Sanremo, 5 at the Tour de Corse, and 4 at the Rallye Monte-Carlo, among others.

Peugeot 205 Turbo 16: a historic comeback

The car behind one of the greatest comebacks in Rallye Monte-Carlo history. The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 made its World Rally Championship debut in 1984 under the leadership of Jean Todt, then head of Peugeot Talbot Sport. The following year, in its first full season, Ari Vatanen and his co-driver Terry Harryman secured a historic victory for the French manufacturer at the Rallye Monte-Carlo. Up against Walter Röhrl (Audi), the Finn achieved one of the greatest feats in the event’s history by overcoming an 8-minute penalty to claim victory in the Principality.

Featured in this exhibition, the 205 Turbo 16 is one of the icons of Group B, a category in which engineers pushed the limits of technology. As spectacular as it was formidable, this generation of cars was eventually banned at the end of the 1986 season for safety reasons.

Did you know? With 16 wins from 26 starts, a win rate of 61.5%, the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 is the most successful car of the Group B era in the WRC, ahead of its main rivals (the Audi Quattro or the Lancia Delta S4).

Citroën Xsara WRC: the birth of a legend

The car that defined an era. The Citroën Xsara WRC was the car in which Sébastien Loeb and his Monegasque co-driver Daniel Elena began their unprecedented reign of dominance. Their victory at the Rallye Monte-Carlo in 2003 marked the start of nine consecutive world titles (2004 to 2012). At the wheel of the Xsara WRC, decorated in its iconic red and blue livery, the Franco-Monegasque duo also won the 2004 and 2005 editions of the Rallye Monte-Carlo.

The 2003 victory was, in fact, seen as a moment of redemption by Sébastien Loeb and the entire Citroën team. In 2002, although the Alsatian driver had entered the Principality as the leader with a lead of more than 45 seconds, he had been penalised for a regulatory infringement involving his Xsara WRC. Under the leadership of Guy Fréquelin, Citroën Sport assembled a veritable ‘dream team’ at that time, featuring notably Carlos Sainz, Colin McRae and the young Sébastien Loeb. Yet it was Loeb who wrote one of the greatest chapters in the history of the World Rally Championship.

Did you know? The Citroën Xsara WRC has won 32 World Rally Championship events, making it one of the most successful WRC cars in history. Sébastien Loeb alone secured 28 of those victories for this car!

Toyota Yaris WRC: The Record Breaker

For the 2017 WRC season, Toyota is returning to a championship that the Japanese manufacturer won in 1993, 1994 and 1999. For its comeback, the Japanese manufacturer is fielding a rally version of its first city car manufactured in France: the Toyota Yaris WRC. This is the car in which Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia won the 2021 Rallye Monte-Carlo, Ogier’s eighth victory in this event, setting a record at the time.

Developed under the direction of four-time world champion Tommi Mäkinen, the Yaris WRC symbolises Toyota’s triumphant return to the very top. It was also at the wheel of this car that Ogier and Ingrassia clinched their eighth world title together at the end of the 2021 season, before the French co-driver brought his career to a close. Sébastien Ogier would then continue his WRC career on a part-time schedule, further adding to his list of achievements. As the last representative of a generation of combustion-engine WRC cars before the arrival of hybrid technology, the Toyota Yaris WRC remains a modern rally icon.

Did you know? The Toyota Yaris WRC has won 2 manufacturers’ titles (2018 and 2021) and 3 drivers’ titles (2019 to 2021), making a total of 5 world titles.

Discover Monaco & the Automobile

Discover Monaco & the Automobile

Organised with the valued support of the Automobile Club de Monaco, the exhibition Monaco & the Automobile, from 1893 to the Present Day brings together 53 iconic vehicles and retraces more than 130 years of history between Monaco and the automobile. Through an immersive journey, it celebrates the unique bond between the Principality and the automotive world. A must-see event for all motorsport and automotive enthusiasts.

Officially inaugurated on Tuesday 30 June in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and Me Michel Boeri, President of the Automobile Club de Monaco, the exhibition is now open to the public until 6 September 2026 at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco. Numerous motorsport legends also attended the opening, including Ari Vatanen, Jean Alesi and Daniel Elena, with several of their cars featured in the exhibition.

Monaco, an automotive heritage spanning more than 130 years

Few places in the world share such a deep connection with the automobile as the Principality of Monaco. From the end of the 19th century, Monaco established itself as a centre of innovation and began hosting the first Concours d’Élégance as early as 1897. The creation of the Rallye Monte-Carlo in 1911, followed by the Monaco Grand Prix in 1929, firmly established the Principality as one of the world’s great motorsport destinations. For more than a century, these events have contributed to Monaco’s international reputation and have become an integral part of its identity.

Years of research behind the project

Working closely with the Grimaldi Forum Monaco, the teams at the Automobile Club de Monaco played an active role in developing the exhibition. Their contribution included opening the ACM archives to unveil numerous pieces never before shown to the public, including historic trophies, original posters, official documents, photographs and archival material from the Club’s events.

Bringing together so many historic competition cars is a remarkable achievement. As exhibition curator Rodolphe Rapetti explains: “These are not similar models, but the very cars themselves — the ones that raced, and often won, these events.

At the same time, extensive research was carried out to trace the history of many of the vehicles, identify their owners and original collections, with the aim of bringing together authentic automobiles that have shaped the history of the events organised by the Automobile Club de Monaco.

An immersive journey through Monaco’s automotive history

Spanning more than 3,500 m², the exhibition brings together around twenty cars that have shaped the history of the Rallye Monte-Carlo, around thirty single-seaters that have competed in the Monaco Grand Prix, as well as numerous archives and historic artefacts retracing more than a century of motorsport.

Visitors will also discover an immersive room, where a film retracing the history of the Monaco Grand Prix is projected. A 3D scale model of the Principality has been created to offer visitors a truly immersive experience

Finally, two of Monaco’s greatest racing drivers are honoured: Louis Chiron and Charles Leclerc. Each has a dedicated space showcasing several of their most iconic cars, including the Ferrari driven by Charles Leclerc to victory at the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2024.

Throughout the summer, the Automobile Club de Monaco will take you behind the scenes of the exhibition by showcasing several of its most iconic vehicles, along with the stories and achievements that have shaped the legends of the Rallye Monte-Carlo, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Concours d’Élégance.

100% Female Amateur Karting Trophy to Celebrate International Women’s Day

To mark International Women’s Day on Sunday 8th March, the Women’s Speed Queen Kart Trophy 2026 brought girls and women together at BOX98, situated in Fontvieille, to share their passion for motorsport.

Created as a 100% female amateur event by the Women in Motorsport Commission of the Automobile Club of Monaco and BOX98 in Fontvieille, this unprecedented day from 10am to 4pm was designed to offer a moment of discovery, excitement, and connection in a welcoming, family-friendly and supportive atmosphere. The goal was simple yet powerful: to give girls and women the opportunity to experience the thrill of motorsport in a comfortable environment — and to show that even in a world traditionally dominated by men, there is truly a place for women on track.

Exceptional VIP Drivers Inspiring the Next Generation

  • Ella Hakkinen – Rising Czech talent and Monaco resident, is the youngest female member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, following major European karting victories.
  • Vicky Farfus – Competing with Iron Dames and finished P4 in the FIA World Karting Cup 2025. The Monaco resident became the first girl in history to finish in the top five of a FIA karting race, among nearly 90 drivers from around the world.
  • Lina Salamanca – Winner of the prestigious Volant Jules Bianchi, an emerging talent driven by strong ambition.
  • Isla McKensie – Combining a career as an engineer with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team and a passion for karting competition, particularly in the KZ and historic categories. She has notably competed in high-level competitions such as the Senior Rotax Championship and the KZ2 category..

These girls were present to share their passion and expertise with the girls and women who came to participate.

Event Format

Each registration (27euros) included 8 minutes of track time, during which drivers set their fastest lap. There were various age categories racing :

  • Kids : 7-13
  • Junior : 14-29
  • Senior : 30-45
  • Masters : 45+

A lunch was offered by the Automobile Club of Monaco to participants at the Paddock Bar, then the final race for the “kids category” and the final for the Speed Queen. This was then followed by a prize giving.

The Automobile Club of Monaco trophies were presented by Tiffaney Perlino, President of the Women in Motorsport Commission ACM, Charles Flaujac President of the Karting Commission ACM, Celine Cottalarda Comite droits des Femmes, Ella Hakkinen, Vicky Farfus and Lina Salamanca.

Results

  • The Winner of the Speed Queen Kart Trophy 2026: Madeline Lasalle
  • The Winner of the Kids Speed Queen Kart Trophy 2026: Giulia Regis

The following won the best lap time in their category:

  • Kids : Camille Spallarossa
  • Junior : Carla Ackermann
  • Senior : Madeline Lasalle
  • Masters : Enriqueta Casanas Ficini

And the Team Trophy went to Martine and Carla Ackermann.

More Than a Race: A Shared Passion

Competing in a male-dominated environment, as is often the case in motorsport, empowers girls and women to feel comfortable and capable in similar environments beyond the track. These lessons inspire young participants and fans alike to pursue excellence in whatever field they choose — whether in engineering, business, or personal development.

Tiffaney Perlino, President of the Women in Motorsport Commission at the Automobile Club of Monaco says “Beyond competition, motorsport teaches dedication, teamwork, and resilience — qualities that mirror the lessons we apply in everyday life. Driving well builds confidence. Motorsport has an incredible ability to unite people from all backgrounds. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what language you speak. When engines start and the lights go green, everyone shares the same exhilaration.”

This Amateur Female Karting Trophy is more than an event. It is a statement: Motorsport is for everyone.

Automobile Club de Monaco committed to EWWR 2025

Automobile Club de Monaco committed to EWWR 2025

On the occasion of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), the Automobile Club de Monaco took action to raise awareness of responsible consumption and waste reduction through a series of concrete initiatives. Result: 140 kg of waste collected, thanks to the involvement of our staff and committed partners.

Each year, EWWR brings people together around a shared goal: reducing the amount of waste produced and encouraging more sustainable practices. The week highlights initiatives that are accessible to everyone, promoting sorting, reuse, recycling, and more mindful consumption. For the 2025 edition, the theme focused on WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), a major environmental challenge.

To fully embrace this dynamic, ACM rolled out several complementary initiatives related to the theme of EWWR 2025 throughout this week.

Digital equipment collection.

Within ACM, and in collaboration with the Green Monaco association, a WEEE collection drive was organized. Phones, tablets, chargers, earphones, and other unused electronic devices were gathered.

This initiative aims to reduce electronic waste, encourage recycling or refurbishment, and give a second life to equipment that can still be used. 115 kg of waste collected.

Clean-up morning on the « Sentier des Douaniers ».

To extend this effort outdoors, a waste-picking morning was organized on the « Sentier des Douaniers » (Monaco – Roquebrune-Cap-Martin section) with the aim of raising awareness about protecting natural environments and to take local action. 7 kg of waste collected.

Raising awareness through play: staff quiz and activity.

EWWR is also about awareness. An information session followed by a friendly quiz was offered to ACM staff. The objective: to better understand proper sorting habits and the specifics of electrical and electronic waste recycling, in a fun and collective way.

ACM clothing collection.

Finally, old products belonging to staff and volunteers were recovered as part of upcycling projects, which have been in place at ACM for several years.

This initiative fully aligns with a circular economy approach and more sustainable consumption. 18 kg of clothing collected, representing 66 items.

A collective commitment that matters

EWWR 2025 was an opportunity to remind everyone that every action counts. Thanks to the mobilization of our teams and the support of partners such as Green Monaco, these initiatives helped us collect waste, raise awareness, and take meaningful steps for the environment.

Together, let’s commit for the future!
