At the end of a very intense last night, Polish driver Artur Prusak and French co-driver Thierry Benchetrit won this e-Rallye Monte-Carlo. They had started Leg 3 in 4th position, hoping for a podium, but the crew of the Toyota Mirai, at its best, did even better: another win in Monaco for the
Polish driver, who already won Rallye Monte-Carlo des Energies Nouvelles in 2013, as well as the FIA World Cup for Alternative Energies in 2015 and 2016.
“We have two good reasons to be happy, after winning here: it was the first e-Rallye in the history of motor racing; it was also the first time for a hydrogen-propelled (Fuel Cell) car in competition. Finally, we want to thank Automobile Club de Monaco for this superb organization, as well as for creating an event of such a caliber, the first of its kind, which allowed vehicles of the future to show their potential in real life“.
Christophe Ponset/Serge Pastor, a very experienced crew thanks to its participations in all previous editions of Rallye des énergies nouvelles and Rallye Monte-Carlo ZENN (Zero EmissionNo Noise) , have eventually been rewarded by a well-deserved 2nd place on Sunday, proudly carrying the flag of the City of Monaco . They were very brave in their choices of charging locations, and they also finish first of all Electric Vehicles (EVs).
Alexandre Stricher/Michaël Torregrossa, for AUTOcult.fr and Automobile-Propre, were back with one goal, in ZE ZOE TEAM: finish as well as in 2015 at Rallye Monte-Carlo ZENN (Zero Emission-No Noise), when they won the Consumption competition and finished 3rd for Regularity. Thanks to an astonishing Leg 3, on Saturday night, they end up 3rd and fulfill their dream : to wear a tie at the Prize Giving Ceremony.
Venturi is preparing for a special week-end for this seven meeting of the season. Having already cross Asia and America, the electric car championship arrives in Europe with the first home port for the Principality.
“Monaco is obviously a special race for us, says the team manager Nicolas Mauduit. We have a bit of media pressure, but it is a good pressure. It allows us to be specially focused on our goals. The target is to put big points and aim the podium with both drivers.”
Determined to shine at home, the Monegasque team hopes to have retained the lessons of the early season.
“We have done some youthfulness mistakes in the team, he confesses. But don’t forget that we are a young team. We also lacked a little luck and success on a few occasion. We want to erase all this now and show that we have learned from our mistakes.”
Convinced to maximize quickly the potential glimpsed repeatedly, Nicolas Mauduit is delighted to count on a particularly efficient and homogeneous driver line-up.
“We have chosen the two best possible drivers, says the director of Venturi programs. They can win here as well the one as the other one. And that is what interests us. Racing home brings added motivation to the team. Nick and Stéphane will show that they can go higher.”

« Being able to parade during this ePrix of Monaco is very special for us, says Lucien Jenny, member of the Solar Pulse association and project’s organizer. When we have proposed it to our students, they were all looking forward to come here. We have chosen Monaco for its historical dimension and its relation to the ecology. This is the perfect place for us. »
In addition to the Solar World GT sharer of the world record with more than 29 700 km cross by solar energy accumulated by its solar panels, the fans will also discover futuristic and surprising cars.
“Two of the cars presented here are part of the challenger, he says. They are somewhat equivalent of the Formula E. This is three or four’s wheel cars. They go fast enough since the best can ride smoothly to 160 km/h.”
Already engaged in race in Australia, South Africa, America or Abu Dhabi, the Solar Team does not stop their way and hopes to participate in an event in the Principality soon.
“We hope that the third car, currently under construction, can race to the rallye des énergies nouvelles or to the rallye zenn in the future, reveals Lucien Jenny. We made a request to the Automobile Club in order to come as close to their technical regulations. The target would be to participate to the rally only with solar energy and without reloading our car. It is no matter if we finish first or not, we want to show that its work.”
Stéphane you play at home this week-end. After a difficult start, a good performance in the principality it is crucial to try to raise ?
Yes, that’s clear. We are at home, at Venturi and we really want to make a great result. We came close many times since the beginning of the season. It is necessary that it runs now. We have a very good car. The team has worked hard, we did simulator. We are really ready to make a great think here. I hope it will be okay.
How do you explain the difficulties experienced earlier in the championship ?
I crashed one time in race. I also experienced a lot of mechanical problems during the change of car. We often had small problems at this stage of the race. It ruined good result in Miami, Long Beach and Putrajaya as well. It is racing. There are five ePrix remaining. We have just passed the first half of the season. There are many points to take and we will really give the maximum to do a superb end of season.
The good performance of your teammate Nick Heidfeld in the first race will upset you or strengthen in the potential of your car ?
That is cool that Nick could fight at the front in the early season. I was ahead of him in the last two races either in qualifying or in the race. We are here to fight and give the best of oneself. He was the quickest early in the season and now it is my turn. We will see this week-end, but the important thing is that Venturi is at the top.
Invite in press-conference, the Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag took the opportunity to stress the importance of Monaco in the motorspor’s world.
« This is the most traditionnal race in the history, said the spanish. The first Grand Prix back to 14 April 1929. This remains a very important date. And this Saturday will also register as another historic moment for the Formula E and for Monaco as well. Tomorrow will be a special day for the whole motorsport. » Delighted to turn up in Europe, the former team principal of Addax team in GP2 has not forgotten the emotion generated by a success at Monaco .
« It is fantastic to win at Monaco , said the promoter of the electric championship. I have won in GP2 with five different drivers : Romain Grosjean, Sergio Perez, Johnny Cecotto and Charles Pic. Triumph in Monaco is stronger than anything. There are many great races in motorsport, but winning Monaco is a very special feeling. »
Impatient to see the start of this round, Alejandro Agag says feeling a dash of emotion crossing the pit-lane for the first time.
« We walked into the pit-lane today and seeing those electrics cars instead of Formula 1 was a very emotional moment for me, he said. Even GP2 cannot usually get in this pit. I did not cry, but it was a very beautiful feeling. »
For the first time, the ePrix will take place in Monaco . SMEG (the gas and electricity supplier in Monaco ) wanted to commit itself to the ACM through a supply of green electricity during the event. In this way, the ePrix will be the first formula electric Grand Prix fully green, with electricity produced from renewable energy sources.
As SMEG and ACM have been working together in favour of sustainable development and electric mobility for many years, this partnership seems like a foregone conclusion.
Since 2007 and thanks to the “egeo” offer, it is possible for everyone in Monaco to buy green electricity without changing its own installation.
In very simple terms, SMEG purchases electricity which was produced in France by hydraulic power plants, and reallocates it to its customers in Monaco . The customers have the choice to buy green electricity and therefore support the production chain. Every year, they get a certificate which testifies the origin of their electricity.
In 2015, just over 25% of electricity purchased in Monaco will be from renewable sources. This result greatly exceeds one of the objectives set by the Climate Energy Plan of the principality in 2020.

The 12-turn, 1.76km layout for the race was revealed. It is a shortened version of the historic circuit of the Principality, which has been hosting motor races since 1929.
The revised layout uses the same start-finish line and pit complex but rather than continue up the hill to Casino Square the cars will take a sharp turn at Sainte Devote and re-join at the exit of the tunnel.
Trulli driver and Monaco Grand Prix race winner (2004 / Renault) Jarno Trulli said: “I think it’s a reasonably good track and obviously the location is fantastic. It takes in half of the Formula 1 circuit, which is enough for the Formula E car and I’m sure it’s going to be good for overtaking. You can see that
going down into the first corner there is a hairpin, then we head rearwards down towards the tunnel (Turn 3), where there is another hard braking with a possible overtaking point. From there you head back towards Tabac and the Swimming Pool corners, which in Formula 1 were very exciting and challenging. In Formula E cars they will be slightly easier, but nevertheless still a challenge, especially the exit of the Swimming Pool, which is going to be pretty slippery.”
