We have waited for a long time, now they are ready to pounce on the roads of Rally Monte-Carlo. The 2022 edition, from January 20 to 23, will be historic in more than one way: a new generation of rally cars, the brand new hybrid WRC1s, using exclusively synthetic or ecological fuels, will allow the World Rally Championship (WRC) to show a good example of what is possible today, thanks to the investments of major manufacturers … and the talent of engineers. The presentation ceremony of the three Official WRC Tams took place on this Saturday evening. The Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, Hyundai i20 N Rally 1 and the Ford Puma Hybrid Rally 1 were unveiled.
Three years of commitment by Toyota, Hyundai and M-Sport Ford
The three manufacturers and teams officially entered in WRC have signed a three-year commitment to develop and enter hybrid cars, which is a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the World Rally Championship in 1973 at the he glorious time of Alpine-Renault and Lancia, among other legendary manufacturers.
Testing of the new cars continued in December, in northern Europe and southern France, and drivers were very favorably impressed with the new machines, for which the development costs of all the new technologies put in place were shared equally between the manufacturers and the FIA, with three obvious priorities: safety, cost management and sustainability.
Announced in 2019, the introduction of hybrid technology, at the highest level of world rallying, has resulted in the final green light given by the World Council of the FIA, the supreme authority in motorsport. And it is therefore in the most prestigious rally on the calendar, the “Monte-Carlo”, that this new era will begin.
“A milestone in the sport’s history” for the 50th anniversary season
The introduction of sustainable hybrid technology for the WRC’s headline category marks one of the biggest milestones in the sport’s history. It’s fitting such a major progression will be welcomed in the championship’s 50th anniversary season. Along with the FIA, the manufacturers and Promoter, WRC is fully committed to the introduction of greener cars. The hybrid powertrain forms an integral part of the automotive industry as the world moves towards a more sustainable future, and it’s essential the WRC is aligned with this evolution. This is rallying with a purpose – providing a perfect R&D platform for the automotive industry to communicate its new technology. WRC remains motorsport’s toughest championship for productionbased cars and the leadership from these teams sends a positive message about its future to other manufacturers considering joining the series.
The hybrid announcement followed confirmation of the WRC’s plans for more sustainable fuel for competing cars and greener energy sources in the service park. Sustainable fuel (synthetic or biofuel) will be provided to competitors across the different championship classes, and plug-in hybrid charging stations will be available in service parks, with sustainable energy covering the needs for World Rally Cars and general service park power requirements.
A 3.9 kWh battery for 100 kW of power (180 Nm)
Each new car in the WRC1 category is equipped with a hybrid unit and a 3.9 kWh battery able to produce 100 kW (136 hp) of supplementary power, for a torque of 180 Nm. It is installed at the rear of the car, next to the rear axle, and protected by an ultra-resistant carbon envelope. It can be used to provide additional power during a special stage or to drive quietly, while respecting the speed limits, on normal roads between the stages.
Spectators will have to wait for the green light to help the drivers !
In the event of a car crash, and if spectators want to help the crew to put the car back on the road, they will have to wait for a green light to appear at the top of the windshield. If this light is red, or off, they should not approach, because it will mean that the car is dangerous and that they risk being electrocuted by handling it. This instruction will be reminded to all spectators throughout the rally!
For the debut of the new hybrid era in the WRC, the CANAL+ group is pulling out all the stops with CANAL+ and CANAL+ DECALÉ broadcasting all the stages live from Thursday 20th to Sunday 23rd January. Three specials will be broadcast on CANAL+, the others on CANAL+ DECALÉ. Before the start, a special programme, presented by Jules Deremble, will be offered on Wednesday 19 January to take stock of the forces at work.
In the commentary, Stéphane Genti will be assisted by Nicolas Ciamin – a young talent in the French championship with two victories to his name. Jules Deremble will lead the stage, while Laurent Dupin and Manon David will be on hand to collect the drivers’ reactions.
For this Monte Carlo Rally, CANAL+ will benefit from the analysis of a luxury consultant: Julien Ingrassia – 8 times winner of the Monte Carlo alongside Sébatien Ogier. The neo-retired rally driver will be on air throughout the event.

90th Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo (January 17-23, 2022)
A few weeks only from the publication of the Supplementary Regulations of the event, scheduled for November 17, the Organizing Committee at Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) has made a few minor adjustments to the route, compared to the initial version presented at the end of July…
Following a special request by the manufacturers and the promoter of the championship, and in order to test in real conditions, as well as to make the new Hybrid WRC cars more reliable, before their first ever appearance at world level, in this 90th edition of the Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo, there was unanimous consent to bring back a final tune-up session (shakedown).
This shakedown will happen on Thursday January 20, 2022 and start at 9:30 a.m. The access will be forbidden to spectators, for safety reasons, and it will only be used by « P1 » drivers, on the Col des Banquettes (744m) road heading for Peille, starting from Saint-Sébastien Square in Sainte-Agnès, Europe’s highest village on the Riviera. Going uphill for 2.3km, with lots of turns, all P1 crews will be allowed to finalize the set-up of their new hybrid cars before the official start planned for the same evening at 6:45 p.m. on the majestic and fully renovated Place du Casino, in Monte-Carlo.
Last but not least, following the last recce by the organizing committee, Leg 2 has been modified, in order to change a couple of special stages that can no longer provide the safety levels imposed by the new international rule book. So the stages « Guillaumes / Péone / Valberg » (SS4/7 – 13.52km – 10:17 a.m. / 3:19 p.m.) and « Val-de-Chalvagne / Entrevaux » (SS5/8 – 17.48km – 11:35 a.m. / 4:37 p.m.) will be run instead of « Pierlas / Ilonse » and « La Tour-sur-Tinée / Utelle ». They will be added to « Roure / Beuil » (SS 3/6 – 18.45km – 9:14 a.m. / 2:16 p.m.) and will surely contribute in making Leg 2 an even more exhausting day on the roads of this 90th edition…
Provisional schedule and stage lengths until the official route is published.
Monaco, October 15, 2021
The 24th edition of Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique will mark the return of concentration legs, with three emblematic cities on the starting list: Bad Homburg, Milan and Reims. And three different routes… to the same destination: Monte-Carlo. This move was wished by the Organizing Committee at Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) in order to boost the economy of the Principality and to welcome again crews coming from all over Europe ! The route for this edition – with a record number of 17 regularity stages (SR) – will be a cocktail of diversity and difficulties. The stages on the menu will all be remarkable, just because whole pages of the legend of Rally Monte-Carlo were written on these roads and passes. There will be a whole lot of candidates ready to fight and willing to add their names on the tables after Henrik Bjerregaard and Jaromir Svec, the last winning crew aboard a 1979 Ford Escort RS2000…
The End of Concentration Leg is scheduled for Saturday January 29 between Monaco (1st crew starting at 6:00am) andValence, the Drôme Prefecture and again the Host City. With four Regularity Stages (SRs) on the menu, this first real racing day will be tough to manage and probably exhausting. The appetizer will be a short version of «Col de Bleine – Saint Auban / SR1 / 07:50am / 15km» before a new stage «Col des Aires – Eygaliers / SR2 / 11:20am / 14km» at the foot of famous Mont-Ventoux. Then crews will then head for Buis-les-Baronnies (12:10pm) where a mid-day checkpoint will be organized for all of them on Parking des Platanes. In order to go back to Valence, the next stage will be «Eygalayes – Montauban-sur-l’Ouvèze / SR3 / 1:00pm / 30km» through two famous passes, Col Saint-Jean and Col de Perty via Laborel, followed by «Sainte-Jalle – Rémuzat / SR4 / 2:10pm / 16km» through Col de Soubeyrand, to close this chapter of the concentration in style. The last checkpoint will be set in Crest at 4:00pm, in order to regulate the flow of crews expected on Champ de Mars in Valence from 4:50pm onwards.
The next day is set in Ardèche, on Sunday January 30, with a start at 7:00am for the Classification Leg and, to start the morning, «La Croze – Saint-Andéol-de-Vals / SR5 / 8:00am / 42km» followed by the traditional pause in Antraigues-sur-Volane, in front of the famous « Remise » where the Jouanny family will serve its renowned apple-pie to all crews. This will be a good way to prepare for another legendary stage, «Burzet – Saint-Martial / SR6 / 10:10am / 30km» via the Ray-Pic Cascade and Lachamp-Raphaël. The mid-day pause is scheduled for 11:50am on Place du Marché in Saint-Agrève, where local products will be appreciated by all participants before starting a tough loop made of «Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid / SR7 / 12:20pm / 27km» and « Lalouvesc – Labatie-d’Andaure / SR8 / 1:15pm / 20km». Then back to Valence (3:40pm) without forgetting to stop, from 2:50pm onwards, at Quai Farconnet in Tournon-sur-Rhône for a set of friendly ritual rallying activities of all sorts.
On Monday January 31, starting at 7:00am the 1st part of the Common Leg will be set in Baronnies provençales Regional Park, starting with «La Charce – Rosans / SR9 / 9:00am / 12km» via Col de Pommerol, and following suit with « Saint-André-de-Rosans – Laborel / SR10 / 9:40am / 28km». The mid-day pause will take place in Laragne-Montéglin, supervised by the Auto-Sport du Laragnais motor racing club from 11:00am. A few minutes to take a breath and appreciate a few local delicacies will be crucial before starting « Ventavon – Chabestan / SR11 / 11:20am / 21km» through the very demanding Col de Faye and a downhill portion towards Savournon. Last but not least, to finish this gruelling day, crews will head for the Vercors hills and « La Cîme du Mas – Col de Gaudissart / SR12 / 1:55pm / 17km» via Col de l’Écharasson as a justice of peace! The last halt before returning to Valence (4:00pm) will happen on Place du Champ de Mars in Saint-Jean-en-Royans where the last checkpoint of the day is scheduled from 2:50pm onwards.
On Tuesday February 1, the start from Valence is scheduled for 6:00am before heading for the Diois hills. This 2nd part of the Common Leg will start with a monumental stage, «Saint-Nazaire-le-Désert – Gumiane / SR13 / 7:30am / 30km» and no less than four passes on the way: Col des Guillens / Col du Portail / Col de Vache / Col des Roustans followed by a very tough downhill portion called « Route de Tremouret » towards the finish line of this stage. The next one will be «Sisteron – Thoard / SR14 / 10:10am / 32km» via Authon and the scary pass of Col de Fontbelle, followed by «Rouaine – Entrevaux / SR15 / 12:30pm / 23 km» through Val de Chalvagne and Col de Félines. The last checkpoint before entering Parc fermé in Monaco (3:10pm) will happen on Place Neuve in La Turbie, from 2:40pm onwards.
The start for the Final Leg is scheduled in the night of Tuesday 1 to Wednesday February 2 in Monaco from 9:00pm onwards. On the menu of this last night, «Sospel – La-Bollène-Vésubie / SR16 / 10:10pm / 31km» via famous Col de Turini will be followed by «Loda – Coaraze / SR17 / 11:20pm / 22km» through Col de Porte and Col Saint-Roch. The winning crew is expected around 1:20am on Port Hercule in Monaco.
Last but not least, in order to respect tradition, the Prize Ceremony and Gala Night will happen on the evening of Wednesday February 3 in the Salle des Etoiles at Monte-Carlo Sporting Club (Dress code: dark suit, evening dress).
