A century after a first attempt at the 1926 Rallye Monte-Carlo, an AVIS Type 3 has finally reached the Principality. Behind the wheel of this century-old car, Dr Robert Krickl and his team travelled nearly 1,200 kilometres from Austria to bring a unique chapter of Rallye Monte-Carlo history back to life.
In 1926, an Austrian factory team entered the Rallye Monte-Carlo in an AVIS, with Josef Pompe entered under number 44. Setting off from Austria towards Monaco, the crew would never reach the Principality. Particularly difficult weather conditions brought their adventure to an end before the finish.
100 years later, the story found a new chapter.
Passionate about the history of the car and the Rallye Monte-Carlo, Dr Robert Krickl and his team set themselves a symbolic challenge: to take the AVIS back on the road and complete the journey that had begun a century earlier.
Nearly 1,200 kilometres to Monaco
Specially restored for the occasion, the unique AVIS Type 3, now more than 100 years old, set off once again from Austria towards the Principality. A true journey through time, but also a mechanical adventure undertaken with a car designed more than a century ago.
Along the way, the crew crossed 4 countries and covered nearly 1,200 kilometres in 2 weeks, passing through two iconic motorsport venues: the Red Bull Ring and the Monaco Circuit.
After several days on the road and a few technical challenges, the AVIS finally arrived in Monaco in early September 2026, symbolically completing the journey that had been interrupted a century earlier.
Dr Robert Krickl and his team were then welcomed at the Automobile Club de Monaco, where they were able to consult several documents from the Club’s archives relating to the 1926 Rallye Monte-Carlo.
The car was also displayed at the Prince of Monaco’s Car Collection, bringing this remarkable adventure, which began a century ago, to a fitting conclusion.
